I was given an old Voightlander Bessamatic 35mm camera, what is it worth?
What is the value of my German Voigtlander Bessamatic 35mm camera. It has a zoom lens, and another kind of tented lens. I know absolutely nothing about camera's or photography. I would like to sell it and need an appraisal. What website could I go to also?
Totally depends on:
1--What, if any original or period accessories you have with it such as case, lenses, manuals, filters etc
2--Cosmetic condition of all the items
3--Functional condition of all the items
Value will vary wildly given differences in these three componets. Just the camera in poor cosmetic and functional condition could be worth only $20 or so, while the camera, a full kit of lenses and original paperwork, all in pristine cosmetic and 100% functional (recently serviced) condition could fetch several hundred or even $1k.
The key is to know what you have, and you don't yet. So you have to spend some tyme online and/or take everything into a specialty camera shop that deals with these items to get an idea of the value. Looking the outfit up on eBay and other camera sites such as KEH.com, Adorama.com, CollectibleCameras.com and CameraRepair.com will give you a range too (some of these vendors may not even carry such a top end camera.)
The absolute best thing you can do is have everything serviced by a specialized vintage camera repair shop such as CameraRepair.com or someplace local to you.
Ultimately most vintage cameras are worth more in the photos they can take than how they look sitting on a shelf. Maybe you should have it serviced and burn a few rolls of film. You may find you really appreciate the quality of the German craftsmanship and design (as well as the spectacular images of which this camera is capable of making.)
