Nikon D40 Autofocus issue?

I have a Nikon D-40 that will not take pictures in Autofocus mode without holding the AE-L/AF-L button. When in Auto mode, the lens focuses, I get the green infocus dot, but the shutter will not fire. I have done a soft reset (Custom Menu) and a hard reset (reset button next to USB port). Same issue. Firmware is A 1.12 B 1.00 . Manual mode works fine. Any ideas?
I have already removed and cleaned the lens and contacts.
Using AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm
1. 2GB memory card inserted.
2. Empty (formatted)
3. Flash on auto (goes off when AE-L button pressed)
4. Lens on A
5. Probably, but thought I'd ask first
Upgrading firmware now...........
I was worth a shot, but still no go. A = 1.12 B=1.11.

Thanks for the idea.
I am in AF-A, auto servo.

What lenses are you using?

The D90 can use all the AF-S and AF-I Nikkor lenses in the auto-focus mode.

There are a few reasons why camera shutters refuse to work. 1) no memory card in the camera, 2) the memory card is full, 3) the flash is turned off and there is not enough light to get the shot without blur, 4) the lens is in the M, manual position and 5) there is a lens/camera error (you will need to remove the lens and remount it.

There are I am sure other things that could be causing this, but you will have to call Nikon. 800.NIKON-UX

The latest firmware shows the B firmware should be 1.11, not 1.00. Try reinstalling both A and B firmware upgrades.
