How can I Copyright protect my photographs?
Ever since visiting my local waste disposal tip, and finding an SLR Camera (35mm) for sale, going extremely cheaply!! I have discovered that I have a particular flair for taking photographs, not least a serious passion for this passtime.
I would like to donate some of my pictures to my place of work for their advertising brochures, I have offered my photographs free of charge, happily. In return I have been promised full credit for them by having my name printed on the brochure/website, for having taken the actual pictures.
I am very happy with this, but what I would like to know is - How can I stop people just taking my photos (from the web, for example), and using them as their own?? I would like to upload them onto the internet, with a view of selling some of my best pictures to help the hobby pay for it's self.
If anyone could help shed some light on where to start, I would be very grateful.
Chris.
I think that they are automatically your copyright IN THE UK, but you would have to know that that was infringed to persue it. And the two problems here are: on the internet you are talking about International law (not just UK) where plenty of countries have different laws, and the resolution of the images online (a high resolution obviously allowing download or copying). There was mooted a few years ago a system to 'fingerprint' images but I don't know if this ever caught on. One thing you could do is contact a few photo libraries (you'll find them on the web) check ones that have the sort of images you specialise in and make appointments to visit them, they could then take your images, sell them to their clients and pay you a royalty.
