What material is used in the frame of old Polaroid photos?
I'd like to know what material is used to make those cool white borders on Polaroid instant film photos.
Nothing special is used. It's just the property of the photo. It's in the method the photograph is made. 
While using film and printing at home-
If you want to achieve a good white border try placing the mask (rectangle) while printing your photos 1/2 mm above the actual paper instead of on the paper itself. Make sure that the thing used to elevate the mask is a little larger than the mask itself so that the mask practically hangs into the photo. The diffraction from the edge of the mask at this height provides a white frame almost similar to that of polaroid instant photos.
If you are using digital, just lighten the outer border of the photograph to the extent that outermost is totally white. The thickness of the edited border for a 8x10 or 8x12 photos should not be more than a mm. Then print the photo leaving a white border around (from the print settings). The white border created on the photo should merge with the whiteness of the paper.
