Films and Filmstrips in the classroom?
Hello Everyone. I have had an odd but nagging question for the past few days that I just had to ask. I taught at 6th grade level from the years 1964 until 1996 and during all of my years of teaching, 16mm reel to reel films (shown on a projector) as well as the occasional filmstrip were both vital to the classroom and often used.
I am aware that these forms of media have most likely been phased out in the age of DVDs and computers but I was wondering if any teachers or students can tell me if these are ever used anymore in this day and age. Any details you can give would be great. Also if you can tell me when you used or saw one of these used. Thank you!
As far as I know I don’t even have access to a projector that will play film strips. However, I did discover a spectacular gem (www.archive.org) which contains many of the film strips that used to be show in schools. I down load them, burn them to DVD and show them on our promethean board. They are a great educational tool, and for history, to show my 11th grade a film that would have been shown to 11th graders 30 years ago, it really brings to life how much our world has changed… by favorite to show is “Bert the Turtle” when we discuss the cold war.
