How do i take equivalent exposures on a shutter priority camera?
How can i take equivalent exposures if my camera only has shutter priority?
In other words i have an automatic light meter in my camera (aperture) but can't figure out the appropriate settings for the shutter speed.
And what if it where fully manual? you wouldn't just guess without any meter reading capability would you?

I really appreciate the help, my camera is a Canonet QL 17 GIII rangefinder and I've located the manual so it will help me significantly. I suppose bracketing could be useful too when learning.
You almost don't give enough info to answer the question. It would be helpful if I knew what kind of camera this is.
First thing, try to get a hold of a manual for the camera. I've taught intro level photography and have had to deal with a plethora of cameras and can't think of one that only functions on shutter priority, which is not to say yours isn't one.
To get an equivalent exposure, change the shutter speed-the camera will change the aperture automatically. Figuring out how to do this is where the manual comes in handy. (Or the type of camera so anyone out here with the same camera can help.)
If you are metering in manual mode, pick a shutter speed and watch for an indicator light or needle. On some cameras the light will turn green, others it will be red, or if it has a needle it will line up with a mark or circle to indicate correct exposure. Then, if you adjust the shutter one stop faster or slower, you compensate by adjusting the aperture one stop faster or slower in the opposite direction. for example, if your meter reads ƒ5.6 at 1/125 and you set the shutter to 1/60, you have to close the aperture down one stop to ƒ8. If you set the shutter to 1/250, then the aperture needs to be reset to ƒ4. Equivalent exposures in terms of density but not aesthetics.
Try to find a manual.
