How Do You Take Out The Film From A ME Pentax Asahi Camera?

How Do You Take Out The Film From A ME Pentax Asahi Camera, Its from The 70's I Think And I Was Just Wondering Because I Barely Know How To Use It...

There is a button on the bottom of the camera. Push it in until it clicks, then begin to turn the crank on the top left of the camera in a clockwise motion until you feel the film let go of the windlass and wind up into the cassette. You then pull up on the crank and it should open the back of the camera, and you can remove the cassette and send it in for processing.

While the back is open, wind the camera and fire it a few times, on at least one of every shutter speed setting. The shutter speed dial is the one on top of the camera marked with "B" (for "Bulb"), and then 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, etc, up to 1000. "Bulb" will hold the shutter open as long as you press down on the trigger. "1" is one second, "2" is one-half second, and so on.

Unless the camera has been abused it should be in fine working order. Check to make sure the focus and aperture controls on the lens are also functioning. The aperture is the ring marked with numbers like "1.8," "2," 2.8," etc. up to 16 or maybe 22. As you turn to the higher numbers the iris should close down to smaller and smaller openings. You'll have to remove the lens to check this, or put the shutter on "B" and turn the aperture ring while you hold the shutter release button down.

To remove the lens on a Pentax with a BAYONET mount there will be a little lever on the right side, where the lens joins the camera body. Hold it down with your thumb and twist the lens to the right. It should turn about 1/3 turn and then come right out. Older Pentaxes have SCREW mounts, and there will NOT be a release lever. The lens just screws out TO THE LEFT. To put the lens back in, line up the red dots and reverse the procedure.

With the lens in place, look through the viewfinder and check the focus. If all are working smoothly, then your camera is probably okay. The only thing left to check is the flash synchronization, and for that you'll need an electronic flash with a PC connection, or perhaps you have one of the later models with a "hot shoe" connection. "PC" in this case stands for "Positive Connection," and not "personal computer."

This was long before personal computers came about. The PC connection is that little round thing on the front or side of the top of the camera. The flash has a little wire (be CAREFUL with it) that plugs in there. You will know you have a hot shoe if there is an accessory shoe built into the top of the viewfinder with a black plastic insert that has a metal contact in the middle of it. Your flash may have a hot "foot" that connects through the hot "shoe" so you don't need to plug that wire in at all.

You'll need a roll of film to test the flash, and the fastest shutter you can use will be "60," for 1/60th of a second. That's why there's an "X" engraved next to it on the shutter speed dial. The little numbers in the window of the shutter speed dial are the ASA numbers for you to set your meter. Set it to whatever the ASA is of the film you are using. This will be printed on the box the film came in. Lift and turn the shutter speed dial to make this adjustment.

Get a new battery for the meter (it's under a plate on the bottom of the camera), and go to town. I still have my K-1000 that I used as my primary camera for years, and it still works just fine. Use only a few frames of film with the flash, as the synchs either do or don't work at all, there is no in-between. Use the rest to test the meter. Just aim at what you want to photograph, focus the camera, and turn the aperture ring until the needle in the viewfinder centers in the bracket, and shoot. Make sure your shutter speed is FASTER than 1/60th in this case, since you're not using flash, and 1/60th is about as slow as you can hand-hold the camera unless you're braced against a doorway or on a tripod.

Stay with evenly-lit daylight pictures for this test, too. You can fool a meter by taking a picture of say a black dog on a white beach, or a white dog in front of a dark room, so do that later after you learn how to compensate your metering.

Lastly, ALWAYS keep a lenscap on the lens when you're not using the camera, and ALWAYS keep an L1A Skylight filter on the lens AT ALL TIMES as protection. It's cheaper to replace a filter than it is to replace a lens if something hits it hard enough to break glass. And don't let your camera get hot by leaving it in the car on a summer day. Pentaxes were rugged cameras, built to last a lifetime, but they can be ruined by heat.
